Enjoying Every Sip and Mouthful

As the festive season approaches, regardless of our background and culture, many of us take the opportunity to catch up with family and friends.

Those occasions inevitably revolve around eating and drinking. Food cooked in our family traditions and shared with loved ones is a true highlight of the year.

For the majority of us, we see, we choose and we eat, sharing in culinary delights that transport us back to past memories.

Not all of us can share that joy. Accommodating those who join us with diabetes or are watching our waste lines can be easily done by the aware person themselves. They can choose what’s safe and wise to eat from a wide platter.

Globally the community presence of a swallowing problem, also known as Dysphagia, is up to 20%. That’s one person in 5 who is not able to freely choose what they can safely eat.

Awareness and understanding of this potentially life-threatening condition is poor.

Yet Dysphagia affects approximately 1,000,000 people in Australia alone.

Let’s see if we can shine a light on bringing a wider understanding of Dysphagia and how we can support those managing life with it.

Hospitals offer many essential services and facilities that are useful in caring for patients, but nothing can compare with returning to our own home. Being surrounded by familiar people can aid the healing process and provide a sense of safety and reassurance.
