Handling Overwhelm

Barbara Braithwaite, Safe Swallowing Team • March 21, 2021

We see a great deal of stress amongst the Aged Care sector, with many staff completely snowed under with the ever-increasing guidelines and regulations required to continue the care of our ageing population. Working in this sector myself, I see and hear their frustration in a career chosen for all the right reasons. They’re caring, sensitive, empathetic, aware and loving and represent the ideal professional you’d want to look after your loved one.

The emphasis on education regarding infection control, dementia, swallowing and the list goes on, is huge. There’s often a short time frame to have it all completed as well. Of course, all this information is vital to continuing to provide the highest quality care. It’s here we need to set a bit of a schedule to fit it all in, in the time required. You may or may not recall your high school days of having to complete assignments with a time frame. That may have been overwhelming as well. Perhaps the best way forward is to remain calm! Ideally.

We offer support for all staff taking our Safe Swallowing Education Course. We want the experience to be a gratifying one that is practical and can easily be applied to your loved one or the residents you care for. One of our recent Course graduates said this:

“I found the Course very useful and it has taught me a great deal in dealing with swallowing difficulties, as I have a client with this issue. I feel very confident in what I learnt and this will help me a great deal.“- Caroline S

Let us lighten your load with this vital education.

There are limitless benefits to the rapidly increasing use of technology across all ages. Research into high usage suggests social isolation can be an unwanted ‘side effect’.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
