Carers – both young and not so young

A often silent population of both young and less young carers provide undeniable support for family members, friends and neighbours who are alone, without support.

In my work in family homes, aged care facilities and programs for those with disabilities, assessing and educating those affected by swallowing difficulties, I see a huge population of carers. Carers take on a huge load.

Primary school children are often providing practical and emotional support for those family members who struggle to manage on their own. I see neighbours willing to pop in next door with meals, clean washing, a vacuum and mop, to help out someone who’s struggling.

Unbelievably 235,000 young people are in this role, often balancing schoolwork and challenging home caring responsibilities. It’s vital that the carers are also supported in their own health, well-being, schooling, pathways to employment and the ability to socialise with friends.

National Carers Week 2023 aims to shine a light on the invaluable contributions of young carers and the support available to them through the Carer Gateway. More information is available at www.carergateway.gov.au.

There are limitless benefits to the rapidly increasing use of technology across all ages. Research into high usage suggests social isolation can be an unwanted ‘side effect’.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
